Objects of irreverence; objects that challenges what is generally accepted or respected. These are the kinds of objects that excite this designer. Hock Heng is interested in common objects with a twist. His designs are built on generic forms and may look normal on first sight. However, upon closer inspection, one will notice that details have been added to challenge the given conventions, whether in the intangible meaning portrayed or the tangible functions of the product.
Hock Heng is a graduate from the National University of Singapore with honors in Industrial Design. Upon graduation, he had worked in the creative industry doing product and communication design but had found a lack of appreciation for good design amongst Singaporeans. This prompted him to act on creating greater awareness for Singapore design and a career switch to design education. Hock Heng’s works had appeared in both national and international competitions, including the Crowbar Awards, LighTouch Design Competition, Opus Design Award and Macef Design Award.
